As brands flock to announce Apple Watch specific apps Lufthansa has become the latest company to reveal its launch on the platform.

For those fliers for whom accessing a traditional boarding pass or getting their smartphone out of their bag is too much like hard work their boarding cards and essential flight information can now be displayed on their wrists instead. The Apple Watch specific app connects to the conventional Lufthansa app on iPhones and iPads via Bluetooth allowing customers to access essential flight information from 24 hours before their flight.

The free app reminds passengers of their flight the day before, provides status updates about the flight and displays the boarding time, terminal, gate and seat number enabling passengers to see until the last minute how long is left before their scheduled boarding time. The functionality will initially be available to Miles & More customers who are logged in to the Lufthansa app for iPhones or iPads with the functionality being rolled out to customers who are not part of the Miles & More loyalty programme at a later date.

Boarding cards saved in Passbook on their Apple Watch will also be able to be viewed and used for boarding.

Jens Bischof, member of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board product, marketing and sales and chief commercial officer says: “The importance of mobile applications is continuing to grow rapidly. As a leading airline, we want to continuously expand our prime position – not just on board our flights and on the ground, but also in the area of mobile applications and digital services. Our goal is to provide our customers with information and services in real time at all virtual touch points, thereby further to make their travel experience more comfortable.”

Lufthansa launched its first apps in 2009 and was the first airline to launch paper-free boarding in 2008.
